The Soul of John Black is an American alternative soul, blues, and rock duo formed by John Bigham and Christopher Thomas. John Bigham was previously a member of the band Fishbone and also worked with Miles Davis and Everlast, while Christopher Thomas had played with Joshua Redman and Betty Carter. Exemplified by a propulsive swing, the old school funk songs are mostly soulful and simple in construction but played with considerable technical skill. Very much a personal project, the two principals augmented their line-up for their debut CD, released in 2003. Oliver Charles (drums), Keith ‘Keefus’ Ciancia (keyboard), and Tracy Wanname (saxophone), were among a number of additional instrumentalists and vocalists featured on the album. Although Bigham and Thomas have sought and found an individual sound and style, there are hints that their listening over the years has absorbed the music of many artists from the more soulful end of the pop rock spectrum.
